Climate Change and Agriculture in Cameroon
Climate change according to BBC is a shift in average climatic conditions. The rapid climate change we are now seeing is caused by humans using oil, gas and coal for their homes, factories and transport.
The issue of climate change is no longer an ideology but its reality and a terrible reality. The last assessment done by the IPPC shows that global climate change is already damaging crops and undermining food production capacity in most part of the world.
It is without any doubt that small-scale farmers need help to move from subsistence to sustainable and profitable farming. By boosting production, curbing post-harvest losses and providing a market for their products. The increase in the prices of fuel and fertilizers is preventing farmers from investing in large-scale arming.
Cameroon’s climate is characterized by biannual dry seasons where many farmers suffer due to water shortages and poor soil nutrition. While short periods of rain benefit local farmers, heavy rainfall sometimes destroys cash crops.
Greenhouses are an ideal solution to the climate change-related problems in Cameroon’s agricultural sector. They are enclosed structures customized to fit the production of a crop and it makes the most use of solar energy. Greenhouses are covered with transparent materials that could either be glass or plastic designed for that purpose. They permit people to cultivate high-value crops all year round while reducing the cost of production and maximizing yield.
